Centre Director, NCAOR attended the COMNAP & SCAR meeting at Tokyo,
Japan during 9 – 22 July 2000. SCAR and COMNAP group of specialists met and
discussed the Antarctic Data Management. The SCAR sub-committee also
discussed the biology of Antarctic birds. The discovery of Vostak Lake with an
area around 14000 km2 beneath the ice sheet of approximate thickness of 3500
km has given opportunity to scientists to study its biology & past
climate/environment and to develop robotic technology for sampling. The
proposed launch of ICE SAT by NASA in 2001 & CRYOSAT by Germany through
ESA indicates the importance being given to polar research by the international
community. Several International programmes have been initiated covering wide
spectrum of scientific disciplines.
