The Indian Scientific Programme in Antarctica commenced
with the launching of the first expedition in 1981. Thereafter, every year
India has sent multi-disciplinary scientific missions to Antarctica. An
adequate infrastructure for conducting scientific research from the Indian
permanent station Maitri (Lat 70.46'S, Long 11.44'E) and supply base at
Dakshin Gangotri (Lat 70.05'S, Long 12.00'E) is now being maintained.
Scientists from diverse fields drawn from national laboratories, universities
and government institutions are provided with the opportunity to carry out
experiments at the permanent station. The logistic support is provided by
the Army and Navy and the Defence Research and Development
Organisation. |
