2. ANTARCTIC RESEARCH PROGRAMME

The Indian Scientific Programme in Antarctica commenced with the launching of the first expedition in 1981. Thereafter, every year India has sent multi-disciplinary scientific missions to Antarctica. An adequate infrastructure for conducting scientific research from the Indian permanent station Maitri (Lat 70.46'S, Long 11.44'E) and supply base at Dakshin Gangotri (Lat 70.05'S, Long 12.00'E) is now being maintained. Scientists from diverse fields drawn from national laboratories, universities and government institutions are provided with the opportunity to carry out experiments at the permanent station. The logistic support is provided by the Army and Navy and the Defence Research and Development Organisation.

A summary of the work accomplished by the 13th Expedition (1993-94) and the objectives set for the 14th expedition launched in December, 1994, are enumerated below:
