Oceanographic Research Vessel (ORV) Sagar Kanya has so far undertaken 14
cruises for a number of programmes such as demonstration of shallow seabed mining
by deploying the crawler, data buoy, BOBMEX, LOICZ, OCM validation, etc. Two more
cruises are expected to be completed by end-March,2000.
Some of the major scientific activities carried out on board Sagar Kanya during this year
include:
Retrieval, servicing, and deployment of data buoys in the Bay of Bengal and
Arabian Sea,
Collection of meteorological and oceanographic data to validate data collected
by the data buoys,
Study of bio-geo-chemical cycling of nitrogen in the Arabian Sea,
Validation of Multichannel Scanning Microwave Radiometer Sensor onboard
Oceansat I, launched on 26th May, 1999,
Validation of Ocean Colour Monitor for IRS P4,
Land Ocean Interaction in Coastal Zone (LOICZ) programme,
Bay of Bengal Monsoon Experiments (BOBMEX) – main phase,
Second campaign of shallow seabed mining demonstration,
Equatorial Ocean Observing System Studies and retrieval and deployment of
sediment traps under Indo-FRG programme,
Training of research scholars and students of various universities and institutions
on various sediment and water samplers and their operation, collection of
geological and Geophysical underway data and analysis of water samples.
